Portofino

where the story begins

Portofino’s story begins in antiquity. Originally founded by the Romans, it was called Portus Delphini, or “Port of Dolphins,” due to the abundance of these creatures in its emerald waters. For centuries, it was a humble fishing village nestled on the Ligurian coast. Its crescent-shaped harbor provided a safe haven for fishermen and small trade vessels. The economy of Portofino revolved around the sea, with families relying on fishing and local agriculture to sustain their livelihoods. By the 19th century, while nearby Genoa grew into a bustling port city, Portofino retained its unspoiled charm and traditional way of life, untouched by the industrial revolution.

A source of inspiration

from the 19th to 20th centuries

As Italy became a destination for the European elite, Portofino’s secluded beauty and tranquil harbor made it a natural retreat for those seeking inspiration and escape from urban life. British and German travelers, enchanted by Portofino’s natural beauty, began writing about it, and their accounts spread across Europe. Wealthy families started building elegant villas on the surrounding hills, blending the Mediterranean landscape with gardens of olive and citrus trees. Portofino became part of the “Grand Tour”.

In the early 20th century, as modern transportation improved, Portofino’s allure grew further. The advent of railways and later automobiles made it more accessible. Iconic writers like Guy de Maupassant and Friedrich Nietzsche wrote of its charm, solidifying its reputation as a secret haven for creatives and aristocrats.

Home of Global jet-set

luxury and clamour of today

During the 1950s and 1960s, Portofino was “discovered” by Hollywood stars, royalty, and international jet-setters. The likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Humphrey Bogart, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor frequented its cobbled streets and waterfront cafes. The village began to cater to luxury tourism, with high-end boutiques, five-star hotels, and gourmet restaurants opening along the harbor.

Today, Portofino remains a sought-after destination, celebrated for its blend of natural beauty, historical charm, and modern luxury. While the fishing nets and boats are now more of a nod to its past, the village retains its soul as a place where the sea meets history and glamour, making it a timeless jewel on the Italian Riviera.
